Children and the Paranormal - Are they too young?

So you think youngsters (say, under 13) shouldn’t investigate the paranormal? They aren’t mature enough to handle what may come. Fair enough, considering none of us in this living realm factually know what is going on in other realms. But then I heard someone talk about how kids are more open to seeing or experiencing paranormal activity because they haven’t learned the social bias’ the adults might have that causes us to “not see” what may happen around us. So how does a child who is more open to these experiences learn to deal with these things, if they are too young? Enter the parents who must take the time to learn for themselves and to unlearn their own misconceptions, misunderstandings and religious teachings.

Recently, our team Cornerstone Paranormal, had the opportunity at the public library to give a presentation about ghost hunting and ghosts to the under-12 crowd (with parents). We had 50 seats available, and a couple standing up. We had kids as young as 4 asking questions about ghosts. Telling us their stories about things they believe they have experienced in some way. Guess what? They weren’t shy about telling the story, and they were all ears when it came to us talking about how they can be in control over their environment.

We had some folks who were highly interested in the field of paranormal investigations. They spoke of being told to get their kids out of the house for fear of possible possession or other manipulations by dark forces. Are you kidding me? What right minded paranormal researcher tells a family to uproot and move because the evil entities want their child’s body and soul? What intelligent parent buys into that garbage and actually goes through the motions and expense of actually moving? These “investigators” had no proof or evidence to back up these statements. They had a “sensitive” tell them the children were in danger.

We spoke of never encountering a “demon” in almost 14 years of investigating but since the mainstream acceptance of the paranormal community has really hit a few years ago, it seems that “evil spirits” exist now more than ever. Why is that? We spoke about how being touched or scratched in some manner doesn’t mean you were attacked. If you asked for a spirit to make contact with you, maybe that was all they had. It’s also possible that they touched you, but your body reacted in a manner to produce a mark, scratch, bruise or something. It certainly doesn’t prove by any reasonable measure that a person was attacked, and there is also no quantifiable way to gauge the “intent” of a spirit that might have interacted with you. All of these interpretations are simply from the mind of the investigator. If you’re looking for evil spirits, you’ll find them. But were they truly evil to begin with? The simple answer is most likely, 99.99% of the time no negative intent to begin with. To claim otherwise would require solid proof, of which none truly exists today.

We were treated to a story about a child who thinks they saw grandma on the morning of which she died later in the evening. Grandma appeared to the child in the early morning hours prior to her death to tell said child that she was proud of them, loved them, and she was always around. The child tells the family this story at breakfast, and learned of the death just prior to dinner time that night. It was grandma, so the child wasn’t even scared. She said thanks and went back to sleep.

So before you continue to talk about how children aren’t ready for the paranormal, if all of your other beliefs are valid, then you can’t be right about this. The paranormal is around them all the time. Sure some kids will not be emotionally able to handle things if something were to happen. That isn’t their fault though, it’s ours. As investigators put out conflicting and often sensationalized “evidence” the parents don’t even know what to expect. As a field we need to get together and tighten up the standards. However, when someone tries to do that, and calls out others for being on other side of the fence, these people are labeled as starting drama in the field. The sad truth, and true drama, is the people in this field who don’t take things seriously enough to not just be thrill seekers, and those who simply ignore them, giving them tacit approval of their ridiculous methods and mis-interpreted “evidence”.

Cornerstone on Coast to Coast AM - Download the Podcast

In case you missed our 2 hours on Coast to Coast AM with George Noory (although George was on vacation and we spoke with John B Wells) you can listen to the interview from this link. We were originally scheduled for 1 hour and was extended due to the calls, emails and chats they were receiving to ask us questions. What a great time and opportunity to be featured on their show. Our Founder Dave Howard spent the time talking about all kinds of topics.

Special Library Presentation Tuesday 29th - Harrison Ohio

Our presentation at the Harrison Branch of the Hamilton County Public Library will be specifically for the under 12 crowd and their parents and siblings. We'll be talking about ghosts, monsters under the bed and much more. We're going to talk about kids who have lived in haunted homes and even go to schools reported to be haunted. We'll have a couple of kids with us who have grown up around paranormal investigator parents and they'll even give a small presentation (13 and 7 yr old). This presentation is one hour from 7pm until 8pm. You must reserve a seat (last year and last week's presentation was "sold out" and the doors closed to walk ups). As of now there are only a few seats left. Join us as we talk about ghosts, scaring the ghosts away, and what a ghost might really be able to do!

Last weekend to check out the Heritage Village!

This weekend, Oct 25th and 26th, is your last chance for a mini-investigation with Cornerstone Paranormal at the Heritage Village in Sharon Woods. The investigation is capped to 25 people, we split you up with experienced investigators and their equipment. One special treat this weekend is that on Saturday night, you'll also get to investigate with our canine investigator Sophie! You'll have a chance to see how she reacts in the village (she hasn't been there yet to investigate, so you'll get to experience her reactions with us for the first time!). Head over to the registration page and choose the Haunted Village After Dark Tour for your last chance to check this awesome place out. Check out the Flir image we captured in this village back in June 2013. Just scroll down to see it!

You can also check out the village on Facebook and you can check Cornerstone Paranormal out on Facebook as well by checking us out just to the right.

Ongoing research

As our October winds down and we finish with presentations and community service that we like to volunteer for, we will be taking a few weeks off then getting back to our research. We'll be revisiting the Heritage Village several times to conduct ongoing research. We're also coordinating with several entities (no pun intended) to help provide us with some advanced education in meteorology and other sciences. We're also in the planning stages of meeting with an elementary school class that has been researching their own school. As a reward for good grades, the principal has contacted us about bringing these students and their parents into the school one weekend to investigate their own school!

Having the opportunity to really do some research, do help educate young minds on what might be possible is something that our team was originally formed to do. Having these opportunities presented to us are simply the best possible scenarios that we could have hoped for.

Heritage Village and Cornerstone Paranormal News Feature

Check out this article written by the Cincinnati Enquirer. They talk about the Heritage Village at Sharon Woods (Cincinnati) and feature our FLIR image we captured in their story. The story can be found here.

We didn't publicly watermark our image, but we embedded metadata in the photo so if someone shows you this image, and claims they took this photo, they are misleading you. We captured this photo in June of 2013 at the Village.

Heritage Village at Sharon Woods

Coming through the month of October, join Cornerstone Paranormal at the Heritage Village at Sharon Woods (Cincinnati, Ohio) for haunted investigations.

Running Friday and Saturday nights, tour 5 of the 9 buildings on location with your paranormal equipment from 10-midnight or 1230- 230 am. You can also tour from 6-10 pm to just see the village, but you'll have no paranormal equipment or access to investigate.

The Heritage Village has long been reported as haunted by staff and even the park rangers. However, until just recently paranormal investigators were not allowed to check things out. Cornerstone was contacted by the village after a change in leadership, and after investigating and finding quite a bit of evidence, they have opened the doors for private investigations as well as public tours. We were even chosen as the house team, giving us research access to the location over longer periods of time.

Check them out at their website to schedule your private investigation ($300 per night, for access to 8 of the 9 buildings). This isn't a place you'll want to miss!
